History of Fountain Pens

The history of fountain pens is very spirited and can be traced back to the 18th century. Even though, Lewis Waterman was the first man to patent the very first practical fountain pen in 1884, writing instruments designed to carry their own contribute of ink had existed for over a 100 years. The oldest known fountain pen which has survived to this date was designed by a Frenchmen named M. Bion around 1702. Peregrin Williamson was the first American to receive the patent for fountain pens in 1809. It was John Jacob Parker who patented the first self-filling fountain pen in 1831. The main problem with the early fountain pen models was that they were plagued by ink spills and other such failures that impaired their sales.

Fountain pens were designed a 1000 years after the usage of quill pens. Its mechanism was composed of 3 parts- the nib, the feed or black part under the nib which controlled the flow of ink and the round barrel which was to hold the nib and feed together. It was Lewis Waterman's idea to add an air hole in the nib and three grooves inside the feed mechanism, to avoid ink spillage.

Fountain Pen

All pens have an internal reservoir for ink and even the mechanism to fill the ink also underwent a transformation along with the evolving fountain pen. Initially, eyedroppers were used for filling ink into the pens. By 1915, most pens had a self-filling soft and flexible rubber sac as an ink reservoir. To refill these pens, the reservoirs were squeezed flat by an internal plate and the pen's nib was inserted into a bottle of ink. When the pressure on the internal plate was released, the ink sac would fill up drawing in a fresh contribute of ink. Eventually, some different patents were issued for the self-filling fountain pen design.

The History of Mont Blanc Pens

Montblanc International is now the enterprise behind the infamous Mont Blanc Pens, but in the starting the name was Simplo Filler Pen company. This enterprise was first begun in 1906 with a partnership of three men: Claus-Johannes Voss, August Eberstein, and Alfred Nehemias.

The very first flagship model was known as the Rouge Et Noir in 1909. The very next year they would originate the very first Mont Blanc pen. The enterprise soon trademarked the name "Montblanc" and thereafter all pens created by the enterprise were released under this name.

Montblanc Pen

In 1913 one of the most renowned pens was released, what collectors refer to as the "snowflake". The Montblanc star come to be a brand hero, and was one of the pens to launch the enterprise into infamy.

Unfortunately, problems arose swiftly for the company. One of its founders, August Eberstein fled to the Usa to dodge authorities for stealing from the companies coffers. But this didn't stop the success of the company.

The small enterprise originally started in Hamburg, Germany soon expanded. In 1934, following the wild success of their Mont Blanc pen, they changed their name to Montblanc-Simplo. In 1977 Dunhill bought out Montblanc. They made a bold moved and stopped gift lower priced pens while simultaneously using the brand on a wider range of luxury products instead.

Right now, Montblanc is a part of the Richemont group. Fellow companies you've probably heard of: Van Cleef, Cartier, and other luxury brands. Montblanc is the traditional builder behind all Cartier pens as well.

Montblanc is well known for its celebrity endorsements, which includes the likes of Johnny Depp, Nicholas Cage, and Julianne Moore.

With this big focus on marketing from Montblanc, there has been some backlash among collectors, however. Modern polls show that many collectors feel Montblanc has come to be too marketing oriented, and the overall ability of the brand has diminished. Only 5% of collectors felt that the brand indeed improved quality, while a mere 19% felt that they had maintained it.

The advent years I expect Montblanc will have a challenge on their hands of pleasing their assembler base while still thoughprovoking to the overall profitability of the company.

Over the years Montblanc has released small edition masterpieces which have made pen collectors worldwide go crazy. A few of the most renowned editions you can find include the 100 Year Anniversary Boheme Collection, Greta Garbo special Edition, and Virginia Woolf small Edition.
